“I was born a maker of things and have made things, by hand, since childhood,” says South African Fashion Designer, Carlo Gibson, who is no stranger to the art of craft making. The first clothing project he remembers doing was learning to crochet, at age five, so that he could make his baby sister booties.
Since then he has studied fashion design, art and went on to study jewellery in Rome, Italy. After obtaining his qualifications, the University of Johannesburg graduate moved on to teach at the University of Johannesburg and at the School of the Art Institute, in Chicago.
His African contemporary clothing brand, Klipa, focuses on the detailed craftsmanship, young-spirited street style, high quality urban design and easy-to-wear silhouettes.
The name Klipa is derived from the South African slang word, meaning “a hundred” in monetary terms. It speaks true to the fundamental principle the brand prides itself in, which is that it is ‘100% home grown’.
Klipa is one of the successful candidates of the Cape Wools SAFW Designer Challenge 2018, and will be presenting his menswear collection this upcoming SA Fashion Week AW19 season.
