Retro Classicism | Bold Simplicity
Somerset Jane was established in 2011 by designer Melissa Jane Somerset. Inspired by the edge in street style and the classicism of timeless shapes, Somerset Jane brings strength to feminine dressing with standout pieces designed in a subtle, yet ever present, androgynous tone. The label has been described as ‘the go to label for work wear’ and strongly believes in bold simplicity and everlasting style.
Somerset Jane shows seasonally at SA Fashion week, and has shown twice as a finalist in the Lufthansa 1st Best Collections and also as a finalist in the SA Fashion Week New Talent Competition.
"I really just loved clothes! I loved the idea that you could transform yourself into the person you wanted to be by using fashion.”

on why she became a fashion designer
WHAT ARE YOU MOST AFRAID OF?
The dark and swimming alone in pools.
WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG THING IN FASHION?
Somerset Jane.. hahahaha just kidding... I can’t say, I know what I don’t want it to be though.. Crocs. Its been happening over at Christopher Kane and if that starts to trickle down I’m not sure I’d survive it..
A WORD WITH
Melissa Jane Munro
Designer and Founder of Somerset Jane
Best career moment so far?
Every time I showcase at SA Fashion Week. I am coming up for my 5th season on the runway next week.
ANY ADVICE FOR TOMORROW’S YOUNG DESIGNERS?
The earlier you start the better. You don’t need a wealth of information or too much planning just start making and selling. The rest somehow comes and never be afraid to talk! Find a nice community of like minded people to keep you motivated, to gain info from and to learn from.
FAVOURITE FABRICS TO WORK WITH?
I always choose woven over knit fabrics. I prefer soft structure rather than flimsy stretch.
MOST STYLISH LOCAL OR INTERNATIONAL CELEB IN YOUR EYES?
My ultimate style crush and literally I think the most stylish girl ever is Leandra Medine, founder of the blog Man Repeller. I follow her like it’s a religion..
