by Khanyi Malimela
Khanyi is a contemporary minimalist women’s wear brand from Durban, specializing in contemporary, ready to wear and easy to wear, well fitted garments.
“I design for that all rounded women. She’s a mom, a professional, a wife, sister, daughter and friend. She is grounded in who she is, has her own sense of style, not easily swayed by fashion but can take a trend and make it work for her own unique look”
Any advice for tomorrow’s young designers?
I would advise young designers to be stubborn about their dreams and their brands. I hate seeing young talent give up on their passion because money is slow to come in the beginning. It takes time to create a name for yourself in this business. Everyone has something unique to offer. Don’t rob us of your uniqueness.
A WORD WITH
Designer and Founder of Khanyi
What made you want to become a fashion designer?
I have always been chubby. As a child, a teenager and well into my twenties. The desire for designing came as a result of being frustrated by not finding clothes in stores that fit and looked good on me, but most importantly that were age appropriate. I then wanted to make my own clothes that would compliment my body.
What style are you best known for?
Shirt dresses and maxi dresses.
Best career moment so far?
I have two great career moments. First was winning an internship to Milan for 2 months, and the other was winning a KZN Young Achievers Award in the Fashion category for 2017.
What item of apparel would you never go on holiday without?
I’d never go on holiday without my Ergo Zen blended cotton scarf. It can be easily transformed into a boob-tube top, short skirt, hairband, head warmer, a shawl to keep warm or simply a summer or winter scarf.
Where do you find daily inspiration?
The women around me inspire me. In all their shapes and forms, struggles and triumphs.
