The focus of Angalia is beautiful, quality staple pieces. Angalia designs are a marriage between Western and African fashion; a blend of classic, modest clothing with colour and materials that are East and West African inspired.
Founder and designer Onkgopotse Seatle-Maitse was raised by a seamstress and high school teacher. Her love and passion for beautiful clothing was inspired by her mom. Initially working as an accountant, with a fashion blog on the side, she resigned March 2016 to pursue her passion and found Angalia Apparel.
A WORD WITH
Designer and founder of ANGALIA
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER?
I am fascinated by the unseen depth of fashion psychology. To me... every item creates a story. It shapes the feeling of the person wearing it. A person’s perception of themselves changes the minute they wear a high quality garment. The Motivation behind every garment, is to create that visceral transition.
WHAT STYLE ARE YOU BEST KNOWN FOR?
A western adaptation of Tribal prints.
“A person’s perception of themselves changes the minute they wear a high quality garment. The motivation behind every garment, is to create that visceral transition.”
Best career moment so far?
Quitting my 9 to 5 last year and finally pursuing my dream to venture into fashion.
Any advice for tomorrow’s young designers?
As corny as it sounds, follow your gut. Don’t doubt yourself and what you can achieve.
There is no formula.
